Alderman Joseph HEWSON, J.P., Norcote Villa, Grimsby;
son of the late William HEWSON, of Grimsby;
born at Grimsby, October 9th, 1850.
Managing Director of Hewson, Chapman, and Company, Ltd., timber importers;
entered the Grimsby Town Council in 1896, and served as Mayor, 1904-05;
elected Alderman, 1905;
appointed Justice of the Peace for the borough, 1898;
during his mayoralty, the Christmas Charity, known as the Mayor's "Hot POT" Fund, was inaugurated, and is now an established institution, worked on unsectarian
lines;
in politics is a staunch Conservative, and is the acting Chairman of the party in Grimsby;
takes a deep interest in Friendly Societies, and is prominently connected with the Grimsby District of the United Ancient Order of Druids; is a P.A. of the Order, and founder of the Joseph Hewson Lodge;
also a Freemason, and P.P.G.S.D. of Lincolnshire. Has been twice married, and has issue three daughters.
Clubs: Constitutional, London, and Grimsby and County.
