bullet  General Notes:

Daniel and his brother, Henry, must have emigrated from England to America between June of 1848, where they witnessed their sister's wedding in Appleby, and June of 1850 where they are found in the census of Oshkosh, Winnebago Co., IL.

Daniel and Grace were married there in 1851 and about 1852 removed to Galena, JoDaviess County, Ilinois where their children were all born. The City Directory of Galena for 1854 shows their home was on Bench Street below Warren Street. Dan was a hotel keeper, and the family relates that the night Abe Lincoln was elected president, he put a lighted candle in every window of the hotel. The name of the hotel was the Eagle House, located then on Water Street between Levee and Green.

On 22 May, 1855, Daniel Jacklin, of Galena, sold to Harrison Bridge, for $100, goods and chattels. These appear to be goods used in the hotel. (Book H, p.322)

Again, on 17 January 1857, he sold goods and chattels to William J. Quinn, which again appear to be items used in the hotel and bar. For these he received $133.50. (Book L, p.71)

On January 15, 1861, Daniel purchased hotel and barroom goods from Samuel Jagger for the sum of $90. This chattel mortgage was filed on 15 January 1861 and satisfied on 2 April 1861. (Book S, pp.127,128) These goods may have been the furnishings for the hotel in Utsalady, which would need to have been shipped from the East.

Grace's brother, Lawrence Grennan, had traveled to Camano Island, in the Puget Sound of Washington Territory about 1852, bought timber there, established a mill and the town of Utsalady.

Daniel, Grace, and their children went by wagon train to Sacramento, California about 1861, the trip taking three months. Here they sold their horses, according to Margaret Judith in her memoirs, for $10,000 . They were joined there by Lawrence Grennan and after establishing the girls, Frances, then about 9 years old, and Margaret, then about 7 years and William, then about 5 years old, in a catholic convent and school, they journeyed to Utsalady, with Angeline, who was then only 3 years old. They probably went by ship, perhaps one owned by Lawrence Grennan or the Grennan and Craney mill. Later, after their house was completed, the other children joined them.

On 19 July 1866, Daniel sold to Peter D'jiruss(sic)a sloop, the"Angeline", with all her rigging, anchors and moorings and a sloop boat generally called the "Flat Iron" with sails and moorings. For these he received $325. Recorded on July 27, 1866 in Book III, p.246.

The family claims that Daniel was a silent partner in the sawmill of Grennan and Craney, but there was found no proof of that. He did have a 1/2 interest in the Utsalady Hotel and Saloon which he sold on September 6, 1866 to James Murphy for $1,000 gold coin. This was filed on 7 Sept 1866 and recorded 15 Sept 1866, Book III, pp.248, 249.
Note: In 1875 the Utsalady Hotel and Bar was owned by Thomas Craney, partner of Lawrence Grennan and was sold by him to Peter D'joness(sic) for $2000. (Book 6, p.102,103,104).

Daniel was a farmer and loved horses and he was not happy in Utsalady. With the money he raised he went East to find a place more to his liking. Some of the family said he abandoned Grace and the family there without saying he was going; that Lawrence Grennan hired a Pinkerton detective to hunt him down. Another account says that he wrote to Grace and told her to address him as Mr. Renfrew when writing as he was using that name because of the amount of money he was carrying.

In any event, when Grace failed to hear from him for a while she advertised for information on him and a response led her to Bates County, Missouri. She learned he had recently died and she and daughter, Margaret Judith, journeyed to Bates County by the first railroad train to go East. They were on the train on Margaret's 16th birthday, March 13, 1870.
