General Notes:
After George Henry Layne's first wife died, he married his housekeeper who was known as Tizzy. At the time George was about 80 and his wife was about 75. The marriage took place in November 1938.
On daughter Ruth's birth certificate, George's occupation is listed as blacksmith (journeyman); her marriage certificate lists him as machine smith (deceased).
As a youth, George Henry Layne was apprenticed to a rope maker. As a young man, he moved to Brigg and formed a bicycle manufacturing firm. The name of his bicycle was "Glandford." Later he entered the automobile repair business and became an agent for Vauxhall and Bedford cars. As one point, daughter Ida worked in the business and used to commute to Market Rasen, one of their branch locations (the other was in Crowle) on her motorcycle. The cycle shop was originally on _________ Street in Winterton and was razed in about 1969 to make way for houses, some time after GHL moved the business to Brigg.
In 1891 George was working as a rpoe and sheepnet (?) trader. John William Beacock was lodging with George, Ruth and baby William at that time.
