Notes for Isaac Read:
Isaac Read was the second son of Col. Clement Read. He was educated at William and Mary, which college appointed him a Surveyor under the Crown. He was much in demand as a lawyer, a successful planter who bred blooded horses and raised fine tobacco on his estates.
He was a vestryman in Antrim and in Cumberland Parishes . He was also prominent in affairs of state, being for many years a member of the House of Burgesses, especially in 1769 when that body was dissolved by Lord Botetourt and the members adjourned to the Raleigh Tavern to form an association against the Acts of Parliament.
He was a member of the Convention of 1774, which instructed the Delegates in Congress to propose independence.. He was also a member of the Convention of August 1774, and that of March and of June 1775, by which body he was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel of the 4th Virginia Regiment, Continental Line. He was wounded in action and died in Philadelphia were he was buried wit Military honors 7-21 -1777.
One record indicates six sons: Isaac, Clement, George, Thomas, Nicholas, Edwin.
