Mutt had no children. Marland worked for Bell Telephone Co. in Des
Moines, Iowa, where he and Esther lived.

Esther and Marland are both buried in Knoxville, Graceland Cemetery,
Marion Co., Iowa, Section 9 (North part of old cemetery), Lot 2.
Marland's veterans marker by his grave says "World War II 1941-45, IA PFC
Army Air Force"

The Cemeteries of Marion County, Iowa, book says that Marland (called
Mutt) was a PFC in the Army Air Force during World War II. Lucille
(Miers) Webster recalls that injuries he received in the war were caused
by schrapnel when a tank was hit/hit a mine and the metal debris hit him
in the head. He came home from "overseas", as people called it then,
with two metal plates in his head as a result of the holes caused by the
schrapnel. After the war, he lived near the Iowa State Fairgrounds in
Des Moines, Iowa, and never did like the sound of fireworks at night
during the fair because it reminded him of guns shooting in the war.
