bullet  General Notes:

Notes for GEN. GEORGE CARRINGTON:
GEN. GEORGE CARRINGTON, "a fine upstanding tall youth" and a brilliant man, was educated at William and Mary. He was, though so young, a 1st Lieutenant in Armstrong's Troop of Cavalry during the Revolution, and was active in the winning of the fierce skirmish of Quinby's Bridge where the British charged, not knowing that the bridge had been removed by the Virginians. He was a General of Virginia Militia after the war; a vestryman of Antrim Parish; Clerk of Halifax 1776-1797; delegate from Halifax to the Convention of 1788, and was later a popular and influential member of the State Senate.

He and his wife lived, wealthy and honoured, at their estate "Oak Hill," just across the Dan River from the present town of South Boston, the site of which was acquired from him by the gentlemen commissioners of Halifax Co.
In 1807, Jun. 1st, he wrote his will, and thus refers to his wife:

"Having the most unbounded confidence in the justice and maternal affection of my dear wife, Sarah Carrington, towards all of my children and hers, and having in a long course of conjugal felicity with her ever experienced the most affectionate regard and attention to myself in which has been manifested the highest possible fidelity and honourable attachment, I feel no hesitation but most cheerfully and with pleasure confide to her control and disposal so far as in her power the future and welfare of our said dear children. I give to my dear wife my whole estate, real and personal, of whatever kind and quality and wheresoever found, either within or without the Commonwealth and to her and her heirs--forever.
Executrix--my wife--Sarah Carrington.
Executors--my dear friends--Isaac H. Coles and James Bruce.
Witnesses--James Bruce, Berryman Green, Isaac H. Coles."
