Adam (Jody's 4th Great Grand Father) was robbed and killed on his way to make a payment on his estate, "Nims", near New Market, VA. His wife was 16 years old. Mathias and Margaret were sent to live with a cousin who was cruel to them, so Mathias had to learn to care for himself at an early age.
