bullet  General Notes:

Rev. William Fowler was Hon. Canon of Wakefield, vicar of Liversedge, Yorkshire (M.A. from Cambridge.) He died "at cottage" Mar 7, 1912, per "Winterton Notes by Canon J.T. Fowler in Chronologicl Order. circa 0350-1923" from Written Notes, transferred to type by Geoff Garrard of "The Winterton Way" (a paper about the town of Winterton, England) from a photo-copied Manuscript supplied by Mr. E. Tate of Winterton. This is on a CD of Winterton History, CD No. 2, at Text, Winnote. The CD was made by Geoff for Lucille Miers Webster in May, 2000.
William Fowler attended Cambridge University and became a well-known botanist, see below:
W.A. Sledge, Department of Plant Sciences, University of Leeds, wrote a letter to the editor of "The Naturalist" clarifying its last issue where two naturalists whose professions were identical and both were Canons of the church and names were closely alike had gotten confused. An article intended to note Rev. William Fowler, Canon at Wakefield, but had confusedly noted Rev. William Weekes Fowler, a Canon at Lincoln. The two Fowlers followed one another as third and fourth Presidents of the Lincolnshire Naturalists Union in 1897 and 1898. Lucille copied this letter to the editor at the North Lincholshire Museum, Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, England, on June 2, 2000. The following is what W. A. Sledge wrote about Rev. William Fowler of Wakefield:
Canon William Fowler (1835-1912) was a Lincolnshire man who, after graduation at Cambridge, came to Yorkshire and served as curate at St. Johns, Cleckheaton, for five years before becoming Vicar of Liversedge where he remained until his retirement in 1910. He thus spent all his working life in Yorkshire and his wide botanical interests - which covered algae, fungi and flowering plants - drew him into active participation in the natural history activities of his adopted county. He was President of the old West Riding Consolidated Naturalists' Society at the time (1876-77) when it enlarged its scope and changed its title to become the Yorkshire Naturalists' Union. He was thus the first President of the YNU and he was re-elected to the Chair in 1901.
References for William and Ellen and their family: See "The Rusling Family" book for more. Author: James F. Rusling, published 1907. Available in 1999 from Higginson Book Co., Salem, Mass.
The Ruslings of Hull, England, actually originate in Lincolnshire, England, as do the Fowlers per Lynda Hotchkiss, Genealogist at Lincolnshire Archives, St. Rumbold Street, Lincoln LN2 5AB incorporating Lincoln Diocesan Record Office.
Inscription on William's children's gravestone (all on one stone):
Margaret's gravestone reads: Margaret Fowler died, Jan 7, 1870 aged 4 years. Mary and John Fowler died in their infancy. "He shall gather the lambs within His arms." Margaret Fowler died Aug. 7th, 1872 aged 1 year. Charles Fowler died Sept. 4, 1878.
Note: There are two children named Margaret in the same family and listed on the same stone. The stone is probably in the churchyard at Liversedge, Yorkshire, England, where William was vicar.
Reference: A letter by William Fowler who copied the inscriptions from their gravestone along with a drawing of the stone. The letter was copied from Museum and Art Gallery, Scunthorpe, England, reference number 13-76-42. Evelyn Harvey-Dew, a Winterton, England, historian made a copy of it for Lucille Webster, June, 2000.
