bullet  General Notes:

Rev. Joseph Thomas Fowler was minister of the Church of England, and Hon. Canon of the Cathedral at Durham, and Hebrew Lecturer and Librarian and Curator of the museum in the great University there, and Vice Principal of Bishop Hatfield's Hall, also a qualified doctor, held a M.A., D.C.L., (Durham), and F.S.A., M.R.C.S., L.S.A. (London) but was living in Winterton in 1899 in the Fowler homestead. Several of his family have been or are clergymen of the Church of England.
In the Rusling book, the "homestead" is described as "an excellent stone dwelling-house on the main street of Winterton on a lot extending through to another street. On the rear of the lot is another modest stone house, now considerably in decay, in which James and Mary Rusling went to live after they got married, and where they continued to reside while at Winterton. Here in Winterton, Joseph Thomas Fowler lives, when at home, and spends much of his time there." Dr. Fowler helped the author's son, James Wood Rusling, explore Winterton. James Wood Rusling was the first Rusling to return to England since Mary and James Rusling moved there in 1795.
Lucille Webster took a picture of his tombstone in Winterton, England, town cemetery on May 31, 2000. It reads, "Here rests the body of Joseph Thomas Fowler, who deceased March 22, 1924. (Note: The March is hard to read.) Aged 90 years old. Abiit nox Obiit.
The Ruslings of Hull, England, actually originate in Lincolnshire, England, as do the Fowlers per Lynda Hotchkiss, Genealogist at Lincolnshire Archives, St. Rumbold Street, Lincoln LN2 5AB incorporating Lincoln Diocesan Record Office.
"The Correspondence of William Fowler of Winterton, In the County of Lincoln, edited by his grandson, Joseph Thomas Fowler, M.A., D.C.L., F.S.A., Honorary Canon of Durham, was privately printed with 50 copies in 1907.
