Lincolnshire Times Report - Barton Golden Wedding - 14 May 1909

BARTON GOLDEN WEDDING

Mr and Mrs R Welton.

On Friday Mr and Mrs Robert Welton, of Caistor Road, Barton, celebrated their golden wedding.
Mr Welton is in his 76th year, and Mrs Welton in her 72nd. A veritable son of the soil, a typical agricultural labourer, is Mr Welton. The sphere of his operations has never been more that 15 miles away from Barton. He was born at Barrow on 9th November 1833. At the age of six year he was sent to work to assist his grandmother to pick stones off land, for which he was paid the sum of 1s - 6d per ton. Of education he got little. This was partly his own fault, because he says, "I was such a rum'un. I wouldn't go". At 16 years of age he entered farm service at North Kelsey Moor, at a salary of 50s per annum. Two years after, on a removal to Howsham the wage was doubled; "but it took it still took it all to get clothes".
He was getting on, and was qualifying for what is the ambition of a good farm servant, namely, head waggoner, and this position he attained under the late well-known farmer, Mr F. Marshall, the farm occupied at present by Mr W. K. Waddingham, of Elsham. The farm is 1,000 acres, and the salary he drew was £13 per year.
Mr Welton's next move was, to Beaumontcote, to the father of the late Mr W. Hesseltine, and thence to Worlaby, to a member of the same family. Here Mrs Welton came into the picture. She was in domestic service with the Hcsseltines, and her name was Mary Ann Shucksmith. Henceforth their lives were to be linked together.
Mr Welton had now reached the height of his "Profession" when he accepted the position of foreman for Mr Glenthworth, of Bonby Top. This was a position in which a wife, whatever else she was, was a necessity, so the wedding took place at Roxby, near Winterton on 14th May 1859. There have been 12 children of the marriage, 10 of whom were brought up to manhood. Eight are living today - three daughters and five sons - and there are thirty grandchildren and one great-grandchild. One of the sons is in the 57th Battery Royal Field Artillery, and has been in India six years, and is at present in Hyderabad.
On the golden wedding day, Miss Alice Welton, of Stonecroft, is to enter the matrimonial state.
The outstanding feature of the fifty years of the married life has been hard work, in which the wife has been a thorough workmate. The responsibility of bringing up a large family on a small wage has been bravely borne. For several years Mr Welton worked for the late Mr A. Johnson, of Barton Hill, and for twenty years for Mr R. Parkinson, then of Barton Field, and he has outlived all his employers but the latter. Owing to rheumatics, Mr Welton has been for three years unable to work, although Mrs Welton is hale and hearty. They are a happy couple, spending their declining years in the house which has been their home for more than 26 years. While not averse to a glass of beer, Mr Welton is not a smoker.

The family had 12 Children, 2 died as infants, according to Mrs F Clipson's recollection of what she could remember.
