Hortense never married, was well-educated, and very well traveled. She
was a mathematician in Elgin Illinois. Margaret Young Rice's grandmother
told her that Hortense and Miriam were "too particular" to get married.
She died at age 98. Margaret took care of the arrangements for her
elderly cousin who inherited a sizeable fortune from Hortense. He, the
cousin, gave Margaret several momentos which she cherishes including a
button necklace made by Hortense's mother, Kate, in the 1880's and a rag
rug which Hortense made. Miriam and Hortense were formidable women and
wonderful. Margaret Young Rice puts flowers on her grave every year.
